The double problem is that creative people usually are NOT independently
wealthy and can ill afford to subsidize the rest of us.

The second problem is that users of such programs are normally neither in it
for the money nor independently well off.   The 

only hope is 3rd-party funding that would allow the authors to get
recompense enough to allow them to keep on being creative.

Note that I do not know the authors; however, "The workman is worthy of his
hire."
