This reminds me that a while back there was some discussion of
the usability of images from Wikipedia. It was claimed that many such
images are subject to restrictions on commercial use and therefore
not usable by most dicitionary projects. In point of fact, although
images with licenses prohibiting commercial use without permission
were once permitted by Wikipedia, they have not been permitted since
2005. The current policy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_use_policy)
forbids the uploading of images under licenses that prohibit commercial
use, require permission for use, or prohibit derivatives. Any such
images uploaded are subject to immediate deletion. Legacy images
of this type are to be tagged and if not replaced or re-licensed,
eventually deleted. Thus, in general Wikipedia images may be reused
in dictionaries. You should check the license of any image you wish
to use in case it is more restrictive, but images with restrictive
licenses are a small and monotonically decreasing minority.
