[Lexicog] PhD in lexicography?

I am sympathetic.  I was not able to find an advisor for a PhD in historical
linguistics three decades back

and ended up in comparative linguistics-a synchronic study, rather than a
diachronic one.  I should have 

continued with Professor Pei at Columbia or Professor Dassonville at Texas
but fate did not allow me to do

so.  You might consider checking the editors list at Merriam-Webster or
similar top dictionary publishers 

to see who is established in the field.

If you are young enough, mobile enough, and persistent enough, you should
get your wish.
