A student of my department ask me to mail to the LFG list the following
question about the representation of the Focus in LFG. Could anyone help
her? Thanks a lot.

Subject: Focus
Hello!
I'm interested in studying the interaction between discourse relations
like contrast or correction (in SDRT framework) and the informational
partition (pragmatic focus and topic).
Can I assume that, given a utterance, the syntax (LFG) and the entonation
will give us a set of possible informational structures (PISs) so that we
can then choose the right one in a given context?
Here is an example (from Jackendoff, 1972):
*capital letters stand for entonational prominence
"MARY ate the beans"
PIS = {(1) /F MARY/ ate the beans, (2) /F MARY ate/ the beans}
where (1) can be a response to "Who ate the beans?" and (2) can appear in
a context like: "What about the beans?"
Any bibliographical help, comments o suggestions are welcome.
Thanks
