Eight Annual Meeting of the International Association of Chinese
Linguistics, Second Call.
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the University of Melbourne will host the
Eight Annual Meeting of the International Association of Chinese
Linguistics (IACL-8) 5-7 July 1999.We hope that you will be able to join us.
IACL-8 welcomes papers on a wide variety of topics, such as phonology,
syntax, semantics, Chinese dialectology, psycholinguistics, language
acquisition, discourse, sociolinguisitcs, historical linguistics, and
computational linguistics. Our aim is to provide members with an
opportunity to present their work in Chinese linguistics and to keep up
with recent developments.
Please send to the Organizing Committee no later than December 31, 1998 one
camera-ready copy of your abstract with your name and affiliation, plus
three anonymous copies. Abstracts may be written in English or Chinese and
should be limited to one typed page only in size 12. Abstracts sent by
e-mail or fax will not be accepted. Abstracts of accepted papers will be
made available on the Conference Home Page on the World Wide Web. A
selection of papers will be considered for publication after the conference.
Our deadline for pre-registration is May 14, 1998. The conference fee will
be A$60 (A$40 for students). Late registration fees will be $15 higher in
both categories. Notification of acceptance of papers will be sent out by
March 15, 1999.
IACL-8 invites young scholars to submit their papers for the1999 Young
Scholar Award. The competition is open to all IACL members who are either
35 years of age (or younger by July 5th 1999) or hold positions below, but
not including, associate professor (US/Chinese system) or senior lecturers
(British system). Proof of age, or rank, must be provided. Finalists will
be given subsidies to attend IACL-8, where the award will be presented. The
complete papers, in Chinese or English, are due December 31, 1999 and
should be single-authored, original, not yet accepted for publication, and
maximum 20 pages long (single-spaced), plus a one-page abstract. Please
send to the Organizing Committee five anonymous copies of the paper and
abstract, and one with name and affiliation.
The University of Melbourne is located in the State of Victoria, Australia.

our website. Updated accommodation information and the registration form
are available from our website. Registration forms and accommodation lists
will only be mailed to those unable to use internet facilities.
Reservations for accommodation must be made by contacting the university
colleges and local hotels directly.
