I just wanted to report to members of this list that on my recent
visit to Hong Kong I was shown some of the preparations for the
upcoming LFG2001 conference in Hong Kong (June 25-27). I am very
impressed by the Hong Kong venue and the enthusiasm of the hosts.
Hong Kong is like no other city in the world---it certainly struck me
that way viewing the extraordinary colors of city lights from the tip
of Victoria Peak. The Peak rises up behind the University of Hong
Kong where the LFG conference will be hosted. I had expected nothing
but skyscrapers, but found beautiful peaks accessible by foot. Above
the city there is a network of 56 km of trails, overlooking gorgeous
city views. The Morning Trail (which is frequently signposted as MOR
NG RA) is extremely steep and rises to wind narrowly through
overhanging flowering trees around Victoria Peak. I didn't have time
to explore all of the gardens and the Governor's Walk at the top. I
did note the Peak Cafe near the top--very inviting after the
vigorously upward-directed walk.
There are also sites like Repulse Bay, islands, beaches, and
charmingly remote areas all a short drive away, with wonderful
seafood. There is said to be phenomenal shopping, though I'm not a
great shopper.
Adams Bodomo is doing everything to make LFG2001 a success, and he has
the full support of the Head of the Department of Linguistics,
Prof. K.K. Luke. They have searched for the perfect meeting room for
the conference--well-appointed, impressive yet intimate, and serenely
positioned at the top of a tall building with beautiful outlooks.
The deadline for abstracts is February 15. This shouldn't be missed.
It's definitely going to be fun.
