Hi,
I would be most grateful for any reference to an LFG treatment of the
relationship between a participle and the NP head it modifies, see
(1).
(1) a. the man washing his car
b. the car washed by the man
My basic questions are as follows. What is the status of the subject
argument of the participle? What kind of control relationship is there
between this argument and the noun head? Is it structurally induced
functional control or anaphoric control? In either case, is it (in
general) possible for an X-zero element to function as a controller?
(We don't want the entire NP/DP to be the controller because of the
i-within-i effect.)
Thanks,
--Tibor
