BACKGROUND TO THE CONFERENCE
Asia is home to over 2400 of the world's languages, many of which are
considered endangered. In addition to facing the loss of their
linguistic and cultural heritage, many ethnic minority communities
lack access to relevant education in a language that they speak and
understand.

This conference will provide a forum in which practitioners engaged in
language development, language revitalization and/or multilingual
education programs can share their knowledge and experience with academics
and others interested in supporting appropriate education and development
in ethnic minority communities.

CONFERENCE TOPICS
- Relationships between majority and minority languages in Asia
- Issues in language planning
- Issues in orthography development
- Language development and language revitalization efforts in the
Asian context
- Education for multilingualism and multi-literacy

- Minority language development in the context of national development
