It should be added that the French government is reducing teaching posts
for

all the languages and even all the subjects (including French, arts,
maths,

sport, and so on), not only for the regional languages, which are not

particularly aimed at by these bad decisions.

Furthermore, the teaching of Latin and Greek in French schools is about
to be cut completely. Please find below the short article by the
Académie Française (from
http://www.academie-francaise.fr/actualites/index.html). The Académie
points out that Latin and Greek, far from being an obstacle to the
learning of modern languages, were keys to the understanding of European
identity and foreign cultures.

 

12 février 2004 : communiqué
Il est à craindre qu’à la rentrée de 2004, l’enseignement du grec et du
latin disparaisse de la quasi-totalité des lycées et bientôt des
collèges de France.
L’Académie française exprime sa vive désapprobation d’une telle
perspective, ouverte semble-t-il pour des raisons d’économie. Cette
perspective risque en effet de priver les élèves d’un enseignement qui
reste essentiel car il facilite la maîtrise de la langue française, et,
loin de contrarier l’enseignement des langues vivantes, permet au
contraire de mieux appréhender l’identité européenne et les cultures
étrangères et favorise l’ouverture aux disciplines scientifiques.
L’Académie française s’associe à la pétition de nombreux organismes et
associations qui ont déjà pris position en faveur du maintien de
l’enseignement du grec et du latin en France.
