HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONER SITE VISITS TO SWEDEN AND DENMARK FIND SCOPE FOR

Site visits to Sweden and Denmark this year by the Human Rights
Commissioner for the Council of Europe, Alvaro Gil-Robles, revealed both
positive developments and areas needing improvement in the treatment of
minorities such as the Sámi and Roma.



HUNGARIAN MINORITY SELF-GOVERNMENTS "A USEFUL TOOL" SAY LANGUAGE CHARTER EXPERTS

Hungary has recently undergone its second periodic review under the European
Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, with the Committee of Experts'
report citing the benefits of the country's minority self-governments. At
the same time, the Committee felt their functioning could be improved by the
transfer of additional authority (particularly in education and cultural
affairs) and by better funding arrangements.



SORBIAN VILLAGE LOSES ROAD SIGNS AFTER CONSOLIDATION

Wjelike Linje/Groß Leine, a Sorbian-German village of 215, is losing its
bilingual road signs after being consolidated with a larger municipality
which is not bilingual as part of a cost-saving measure.




THE SIMPSONS SUPPORT CORNISH IDEPENDENCE

Producers from the hit cartoon series The Simpsons contacted a Cornish
language NGO at the weekend to ask for help in making a Christmas Day
special.  The episode will feature Lisa Simpson, the vegetarian
intellectual character, shouting "rydhsys rag Kernow lemmyn" (freedom for
Cornwall now) as she runs around the house in Springfield.



EU ELECTIONS: GALICIAN EURO-MP'S SEAT DENIED IN 'FLORIDA STYLE' RECOUNT,
DISILLUSIONMENT ELSEWHERE

campaigner Camilo Nogueira (Bloque Nacionalista Galego -EFA) is to be denied
his seat in the European Parliament.
