On the topic of the anglicization of place names in Ireland, can I draw
to the attention of readers of this list the brilliant and moving play
by Brian Friel, Translations. I had read this before I saw it performed,
and couldn't imagine how it was stageable, but it was triumphantly
staged at Manchester's Library Theatre. The play is entirely in English,
but characters are supposed to be speaking sometimes in English,
sometimes in Irish, and sometimes in Latin.....

As for 'remote' and 'bulky strings of unpronounced letters'. Well....
The website has a section on names (Towns and Villages) as well as
pictures to make you wish you were there!
