Current Issues in Language Planning
Call Deadline: 15-Feb-2006
Proposals are invited for papers for an issue of the journal on Language
Planning and Compulsory Foreign Language Studies in Primary/ Elementary
Schools. Abstracts should be about 300 words.
The teaching of foreign languages in primary/elementary schools has not
received the same attention from language planners as in later stages of
education. This volume will examine the issues involved in deciding
whether to make the study of foreign languages compulsory; choosing the
language(s) to be taught, particularly in multicultural nations; whether
to support community or indigenous languages; fostering bilingualism; the
effect of such language teaching on attitudes to other languages; planning
for models of teaching and teacher training; the consequences for planning
language teaching in secondary schools; and the role of language teaching
in supporting governments' social and economic policies.
