LANGUAGE COMMUNITY TO STAGE SUMMIT
By Rosamond Hutt, Community Newswire

EDUCATION Esperanto Scarborough, 27 Apr 2006 - 08:35 Speakers of a
language devised as an international means of communication were preparing
to gather tomorrow in Scarborough for a weekend-long conference. The 87th
annual British Esperanto Congress will be conducted entirely in Esperanto,
which was invented at the end of the 19th century as a universal tongue
and does not belong to any country or ethnic group. Speakers have formed a
worldwide community and hold regular events around the globe to promote
the language.

The annual conference, organised by the Esperanto Association of Britain,
will feature lectures by eminent "Esperantists", poetry readings, drama
and singing in Esperanto. A spokesperson for the Esperanto Association of
Britain said the Government's recent decision to teach Esperanto in
primary schools as an introduction to foreign languages meant it was "an
important time" for the organisation's education policy. The conference is
taking place at the Green Gables Hotel, Green Gables Hotel, West Bank.
