The Ukrainian government is planning to take measures to recognize the
Russian language as the second official language in Ukraine, Interfax news
agency reports. The consistent protection of the freedom to choose the
language of communication and education and the recognition of the Russian
language as the second official language in Ukraine is to be provided by a
program being developed as part of the governments activities in 2006
2011, a press release distributed during a governmental meeting on
Wednesday says.
The policy also envisages removing obstacles in the way of the development
of all cultures and the rendering of assistance in maintaining national,
cultural, linguistic and spiritual variety as a guarantee of the further
development of the society. The program envisages guarantees the rights of
political opposition, as well as comprehensive participation for citizens
in developing and implementing the state policy at all levels, from local
to national.
