Job Description
BILINGUAL EDUCATION starting Fall 2006. The School of Education invites
applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in bilingual
teacher education. Primary responsibilities will be to teach graduate and
undergraduate courses in bilingual education, including methods of
teaching, (bi)literacy, and native language arts, as well as teaching
Spanish in secondary schools. Other responsibilities include advising
students, supervising student teachers, serving on faculty committees,
curriculum development, and engaging in scholarly activities and
publication.
Situated at the center of one of the world's most diverse metropolises,
City College views its diversity as its greatest resource, and works

and particularly of the surrounding local community of upper Manhattan, is
reflected in the make-up of both students and faculty, as well as in the
content, perspectives, concerns, and materials throughout our curriculum.
We are especially interested in candidates who would like to join a
vibrant, growing faculty committed to advancing knowledge and supporting
bilingualism and language learners in urban schools. Candidates with a
research focus on childhood bilingualism and biliteracy and those who are
knowledgeable about the effective implementation of bilingual education
programs in urban public schools are particularly encouraged to apply.
Job Requirements
Required qualifications are formal preparation in bilingual education;
fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Mandarin Chinese, as well as a
demonstrated or emerging record of research. For a professorial
appointment, a doctorate in bilingual education or a closely related field
is required.
Preferred qualifications include experience teaching bilingual classes
grades 1-6; preparing and supervising pre- and in-service teachers in
bilingual education and/or Spanish; and New York State teaching
certification.
