COLLEGE OF ARTS & HUMANITIES
DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE

RCUK Academic Fellow
(Project on Welsh-English code-switching)

Starting salary: L20,044 - L24,352 (on R&A Grade 1A) p.a.

An RCUK Fellowship in Bilingualism has been awarded to the University of
Wales, Bangor, to be attached initially to a project funded by the Arts
and Humanities Research Council on code-switching and convergence in
Welsh. This project is being conducted by Professor Margaret Deuchar of
the Department of Linguistics and English Language from 2005-10. The
Fellow's main duties will be to participate in the AHRC-funded research
project on code-switching in Welsh as a research officer, assisting as
appropriate with data collection, transcription and analysis as well as
providing creative input at a theoretical level. In addition it is hoped
that the Fellow will contribute to research output and grant capture in
bilingualism in general in the context of the department's and
university's research strategy.

He/she will also be asked to participate in departmental teaching to a
gradually increasing extent over the five-year period and to engage in
outreach work in schools. The Fellowship is a good opportunity for the
Fellow to develop their own research career in a way that will facilitate
entry into a permanent academic position. Candidates should have a PhD in
Linguistics or a related field, preferably one or more publications, and
should be ambitious and highly motivated researchers. Knowledge of Welsh
or willingness to learn it is desirable, as is the ability to provide
theoretical input to the project. The successful candidate will be
expected to start 1st October, 2006 and the post is for a period of 5
years, with the likelihood of a permanent post following.
