Immigration policy criticised

IRELAND'S immigration policies could cause serious difficulties for Irish
workers if there is an economic slump, according to a report. The study,
commissioned by the National Economic and Social Council, urges the state
to take control of policy and stop allowing employers to decide who comes
here for work. The report also says that the government cannot analyse
information about migrant workers because its computer systems are
incompatible.

Call to offer two Irish language courses

ENDA KENNY has called for secondary students to be offered a choice of two
Irish language courses in the Leaving Cert to reverse the decline of the
language in school. At a Fine Gael conference on the future of the
language yesterday, the party leader proposed creating a new subject
Communicating in Irish  which would award 50% of marks for oral language
skills.
