Japanese Education Minister Will Not Introduce English Language To Curriculum

Japanese Education Minister Bunmei Ibuki expressed his opposition to a 
proposed plan that would make the English language compulsory at elementary 
schools. He compared the plan to "sweets," pleasing but unnecessary. He 
said, "They (elementary school pupils) can eat delicious cakes and Japanese-
style sweets if they still have an appetite for them (after eating the 
necessities)."
