AILA 2008 SYMPOSIUM: Multilingualism and minority languages:
achievements and challenges in education
Convenors:
Jasone Cenoz, University of the Basque Country,
Durk Gorter, Ikerbasque-University of the Basque Country
This symposium focuses on European minority languages which are
'unique' languages in one state (Irish, Welsh, Frisian) or spread over
more than one state (Basque, Catalan).
The symposium will discuss the results of research conducted on
bilingual and multilingual programs. It will look at the results of
research studies on language (language proficiency in the majority,
minority and other languages) and academic outcomes and attitudes and
discuss them as compared to monolingual programs. It will also examine
the challenges of teaching through a minority language in a changing
world such as globalization and the spread of English, specific
educational challenges faced by minority languages or immigration.
