Lip-reading computer program sought
NORWICH, England, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- British scientists say they want to
create a computer lip-reading system that could be used to fight crime.
The researchers at the University of East Anglia say their three-year
project will involve the collection of data for lip-reading and use it to
create machines that automatically convert videos of lip-motions into
text. It builds on work carried out at the university to develop
state-of-the-art speech reading systems.
The project is in collaboration with Surrey University scientists, who
have built accurate and reliable face and lip trackers, and Britain's Home
Office Scientific Development Branch, which wants to investigate the
feasibility of using the technology for crime fighting.
The team also hopes to develop programs that can computerize lip-reading
of other languages.
