Language: GPCC leaders for review of CLP decision
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji, Feb 22 The senior Congress leaders in the state are appalled at
the decision of the Congress Legislature Party, earlier this week, to
grant official language status to Marathi and Konkani in Roman script and
want it reviewed. According to highly placed sources in the party, the Goa
Pradesh Congress Committee only was authorised to take a policy decision
and that CLP has transgressed into the domain of the GPCC and decided to
change the policy of the party. The sources also informed that the CLP
erred in many other ways while verbally passing the resolution to grant
official status to Marathi and Konkani in Roman script, adding that first
of all it was not listed on the agenda for the meeting and that there was
no resolution in writing, a practice that is generally followed while
taking major policy decisions.
The sources in the party further said that Congress leaders that since the
Official Language Act was passed following a decision taken by the GPCC it
only had the powers to review that decision. The CLP decision was null and
void, they said. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Mr Pratapsingh Rane, who is
now in New Delhi, is likely to meet the All Indian Congress Committee
president, Ms Sonia Gandhi tomorrow and apprise her of the political
situation in Goa, particularly in view of the CLP decision to grant
official language status to Marathi and Konkani in Roman script, said the
sources.
The Chief Minister is also expected to broach her about another decision
of the CLP as regards to holding of elections in early May, they added. Mr
Rane is also expected to meet Mr Ahmed Patel, political advisor to Ms
Gandhi. The Education Minister, Mr Luizinho Faleiro who is also in
national capital is expected to meet Ms Gandhi tomorrow morning and hold
talks with her on party matters before returning to state via Mumbai.
