Bangalore, February 22:

The State Government on Thursday decided to make learning of Konkani as
third optional language for students from sixth standard in the coastal
belt.

>>From the next academic year, the students in Udupi, Mangalore and Karwar
will have the option to study Konkani as the third language, Minister for
Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti told reporters here
after a cabinet meeting.

The Cabinet also decided to set up a cabinet sub-committee to decide the
future of 2215 schools which the government has already decided to
derecognise for violating language policy. These schools have been
teaching in English medium after getting permission to run schools in
Kannada medium.

The Cabinet Sub-Committee would present a report on the issue in about a
month to help the government take a decision before the commencement of
the next academic year.

The government had earlier decided to close these schools by the end of
this academic year and the decision evoked protests from parents, school
managements and even legislators.
