Doherty slams Fine Gael Irish language policy as "foolish"

Mar 22, 10:42 am

A Donegal Sinn Fein councillor has today branded Fine Gael's policy on the
teaching of the Irish languague as "foolish". Clr Pearse Doherty was
speaking following support from Donegal VEC for a motion calling for a
major overhaul of the teaching of the Irish language throughout the
education system here. He said that Fine Gael's suggestion that Irish not
be a compulsory Leaving Cert subject would lead to the demise of the
language. However, Clr Doherty commended the party's representatives in
Donegal who backed his motion to change the teaching of the language.
