*Nine milli on targeted for education development*
20 September, 2007
GABORONE - The European Commission and the Ministry of Finance and
Development Planning this week signed an additional agreement to the ongoing
P420 million education and training sector policy support programme.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Head of Delegation of the European
Commission to Botswana and the Southern African Development Community, Mr
Paul Malin, said the EU support contributed to greater access and better
quality education in Botswana.

Mr Malin said the additional increase of P9, 5 million was aimed at helping
the government to develop a national language policy over the next three
years. He said the policy would focus on teaching children in their mother
tongue and to formulate an inclusive education policy that targeted disabled
children.

He added that the EU had been the main contributor to Botswana's education
development over the last decade. "Our additional support to the development
of these two policies will improve access for disadvantaged children to
education and training, which is fundamental to their personal and
professional development," he said.

The funds will be disbursed each year to the Ministry of Finance and
Development Planning and will be spent according to government procedures.
The funds will also be subject to the controls applied by the government.
The level of funding will correspond to government meeting targets to
improve the provision of education and training and increasing quality and
broadening access. BOPA
