Government adopts concept of public policy on language


The Government Committee on Humanitarian Issues chaired by Vice Prime
Minister Ivan Vasyunyk approved a draft Decree of the President "On
Concept of implementation of the public policy on language". According
to the government's press-office, implementation of the Concept will
promote the creation of an optimal language field in the state, create
necessary conditions for strengthening nationality of the Ukrainian
language as well as ensure free and conflict-free development of all
evident in Ukraine languages of national minorities and their revival.
The document determines the key tasks: protection of the
language-cultural and language-information field of Ukraine,
development of the Ukrainian segment of Internet and Ukrainian
software, creation of conditions for studying by the citizens of
Ukraine languages of international communication on the principle of
"state language plus two foreign languages at the least" etc.

Thus, the priorities for implementation of the language policy in
Ukraine will be: establishment of independent legislative basis for
state support of publishing-house in Ukrainian, Ukrainian-speaking
mass media, song products etc, improvement of the quality of Ukrainian
broadcasting on native tv and radio channels, provision of the
citizens' rights for receiving information in Ukrainian, including
through printed mass media and movies review, dubbed, subtitled in
Ukrainian, enhancing the prestige of the Ukrainian language, bringing
up Ukrainian language consciousness and national dignity.
