International Journal for the Semiotics of Law
Call Deadline: 18-Oct-2008
Call for Papers
The Media of Law
Contributions are invited for a special 2009 issue of the International
Journal for Semiotics of Law, on the theme of 'Media and Law'.
The volume presents an opportunity to consider the environment and
communicative practices of a public domain in terms of medium and semiotic
theory, and the possible transformative effects of different media forms,
including video, digital, mixed and broadband media. Particular commentary
on different language and sign systems - visual, televisual, gestural,
written and spoken - in various contexts can be explored. Papers should
address an explicit communicative/language/semiotic methodology.
A focus of the volume will be how on televisual, digital and new media can
become a tool or accessory in mediating the process and outcome of legal
administration, mediation and decision-making.
Theoretical responses to the theme of 'Signs, Media and Law' are also
welcome.
The representations of law in media (film and television) productions can
also be considered.
This volume will not address issues in the regulatory domain of media law.
Abstracts (200-400 words) for proposed papers should be sent to the Guest
Editor, Geoffrey Sykes, gsykesuow.edu.au, School of Social Sciences, Media
and Communication,
University of Wollongong, Australia
Deadline for submissions of abstracts: by October 18
(early inquiries and expressions of interest welcomed)
Deadline for submissions of papers: April 2009 or as negotiated
