Ad in NYTimes, 2/11/08 on the subject of Goguryeo

 Today's New York Times carried an ad that consisted entirely of the
following image:


Apparently there was once a political entity with this name (or perhaps the
name Balhae) that encompassed part of Korea, a hunk of China, and also
extended into what is now the southeastern-most part of Russia, and perhaps
also Mongolia. I googled the website
http://www.forthenextgeneration.com/balhae/ and it seems that there are a
number of grievances that someone (Koreans?) have against China, Japan
(comfort women), and beyond.

Does anyone know any more about the history of this dispute?
