Language skills in big demand
MANAMA
THE need for qualified trainers with multiple language skills at
workplaces was stressed at a seminar last night. The Bahrain Society
for Training and Development organised the seminar at the Bahrain
Institute for Banking and Finance. US-based Language Training Design
director Anne Lomperis spoke on the topic, "Best practice for
workplace language training". In a global economy, the demand for
multiple language capability in the labour force is increasing, said
Ms Lomperis, an independent consultant who has specialised in
workplace English since 1982. "Yet the language training profession
does not have qualified trainers in the pipeline to meet this demand,"
she noted.
"Thus, the well-intentioned, or ill-intentioned, unprofessional fills
the gap. We have a pressing agenda for teacher training around the
world." Ms Lomperis addressed the key issues surrounding the
development of best policy and practice for Language for Occupational
Purposes (LOP). She talked about the critical need for teacher
training and building up the professionalism of LOP.
