The conference intends to bring together scholars, from various disciplines to
discuss English language issues in Asia, past, present and future. Paper
presentations or posters may be theoretical, experimental or reflective.

Overview of Conference

English has become the main language in many countries in Asia as a result of
centuries of British colonialisation, resulting in what appears at
times to be a
tug of war of roles between English and the vernaculars in the development of
the countries in the region, and (re)constructions of cultures, identities and
ideologies, while preserving old ones. Today, the relationship between English
and Asia remains equally ambiguous and changing in all spheres: economical,
technological, academic, social, political. The language unites and divides
populations depending on the role that it holds within a country. This
and other
issues could be interesting 'food for thought' in a conference that would bring
together not just professionals and students in language and linguistics, but
also researchers from other disciplines and interested parties from
industry. We
invite papers from all parties interested in the issue, which may be
theoretical, experimental or reflective.

Overview of Venue:

Kuala Lumpur is a magnificent city where the east meets the west and plenty of
things to do and look at for local and international visitors. The Crown
Princess Hotel is a 5-star hotel which has agreed to give fabulous rates to
conference participants. It is situated in the hip Ampang district and only a
few minutes walk to the famous Twin Towers. The conference opening will be
conducted on the campus of IIUM (situated among the valleys at the foot of the
Titiwangsa Range) and this is followed by a keynote address from a world class
speaker (from the Malaysian industry) you don't want to miss (announcement will
be made later). Activities such as daily after-conference free and
easy programs
are being planned for those who would like to experience KL the way the locals
