School fails to get a language GCSE
A SCHOOL in Greater Manchester failed to score a single GCSE in modern
languages last year.
The 546-pupil George Tomlinson school in Bolton was one of a handful
of schools nationwide where no pupils sat exams in French, German or
Spanish. It follows a decision by the government in 2004 to take
foreign languages off the list of compulsory GCSE subjects.
Head teacher Rachel Glazebrook blamed a historic staffing crisis which
meant the school had not felt able to offer pupils the `best
preparation' for French and German exams.
