Special Officer-In-charge for Linguistic Minorities (SOLM), Shri
Upendera Tripathi, has stressed the need for pursuing more vigorously
the Constitutional Safeguards provided to the Linguistic Minorities.
Welcoming the delegates at the National Conference of Nodal Officers
and Education Secretaries here today, Shri Tripathi announced that a
10-Point Programme is being prepared for helping Linguistic Minorities
Safeguard their right to maintain the identity and propagation for
their language. He also said that henceforth there will be regular
meetings of Nodal Officers and Education Secretaries of States/UTs
dealing with the Office of Special Officer Linguistic Minorities.

Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Shri Vivek Mehrotra was the
Chief Guest. Inaugurating the Conference Shri Mehrotra emphasised the
importance of language in furthering the cultural and social identity
of a people and said that in the current scenario, where migration to
urban areas and across state borders is the Order of the Day, it is
even more imperative to protect the interest of Linguistic Minorities.
Shri Mehrotra requested the Nodal Officers and the Education
Secretaries to properly publicise the Scheme of Safeguards for
Linguistic Minorities. He said that this will help promote
multi-lingualism and multi-culturalism: which will in turn serve the
basic idea enshrined in the Constitution of India-Unity in Diversity.

The Running Shield and the Certificate of the Special Officer
Linguistic Minorities for the year 2007-08 was presented to Kerala for
best performance in the implementation of the Scheme of Safeguard for
Linguistic Minorities.

Shri K.K.Sethi, former SOLM, also addressed the Conference. Addressing
the Conference Dr. R.Sachdeva, Director, CIIL, Mysore, talked about a
long term and sustainable National Language Policy wherein Minor
Languages are viewed as pillars of strength of our composite cultural
heritage.
