*LONG LIVE OUR LANGUAGES!*
* *
*“Our language is the life-giving waters for our People, nurturing the roots
of our identity and sovereignty. Our language will lead our children to this
water source to make them strong, confident and well.”*
— Elder language activist, 2009
Dear Harold:
As we reflect back on 2009, we are grateful for the blessings and
confirmations Indigenous Language Institute has received to keep our work
going. It has been a most challenging year in the area of finances, as
experienced by most non-profit organizations. ILI has managed to keep going
with “blood, sweat and tears” of staff, board and advisors – and with
support from Friends like you – to continue our services to Native language
practitioners.
We are grateful for the grants and gifts in 2009 from Administration for
Native Americans Language Planning Grant, Verizon Tech Savvy Award
administered by the National Center for Family Literacy, IBM Corporation,
San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, First Nations Development Institute,
Seminole Tribe of Florida, O’Keeffe Family Foundation, Pueblo of Pojoaque,
St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, Microsoft Matching Grant, Cheyenne and Arapaho
Tribes of Oklahoma.
We are grateful to the numerous individual Friends for your gifts, every
dollar of which has helped infuse energy into our language work. ILI has
always been frugal, operating with a small core staff of four committed
professionals and keeping operational costs manageable. In economic
challenging times, ILI has diligently researched ways to further cut
operational costs without sacrificing the quality of our services.
As we close the year and look to 2010, we ask for your support. We could not
have survived 2009 without your help, big and small. Your dollar directly
affects individuals, communities and nations who are working to revitalize
and preserve their languages and traditions. The urgency of Native language
work becomes all the more intense when we lose another first language
speaker. Time is not on our side.
Please join us in this vital effort! Please make your tax deductible
contribution today. You can donate
