Texas appeals court delays deadline for limited-English programs in
middle schools, high schools
Texas will not have to come up with a new language program for
limited-English middle and high school students until later this year
- if at all - under a ruling from a federal appeals court.
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has delayed a court-ordered
deadline for state education officials to draft a new learning program
for the estimated 140,000 secondary school students in Texas with
limited English skills. The deadline was imposed by a federal judge
who wanted the plan completed by the end of January.
In addition, the appellate court said it would hold a hearing in June
on the state's appeal of the order by U.S. District Judge William
Wayne Justice.
