EDUCATION POLICY FOR GAELTACHT THE FOCUS OF CONRADH NA GAEILGE SEMINAR

Co. Galway, Ireland — 30 Jun. 2009 — Conradh na Gaeilge’s Tionól
Gaeltachta seminar, entitled I dTreo Pholasaí Oideachais Gaeltachta,
will focus on developing an education policy for Gaeltacht schools and
will be held in Ionad Oidhreachta an Bhlascaoid, Dún Chaoin, Co.
Kerry, on Friday 3 July 2009 starting at 8.00pm.

Conradh na Gaeilge’s Tionól Gaeltachta seminar, entitled I dTreo
Pholasaí Oideachais Gaeltachta, will focus on developing an education
policy for Gaeltacht schools and will be held in Ionad Oidhreachta an
Bhlascaoid, Dún Chaoin, Co. Kerry, on Friday 3 July 2009 starting at
8.00pm.

Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa, President of Conradh na Gaeilge, will chair
the seminar. Speakers include Seosamh Mac Donnacha, Acadamh na
hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, Galway; Bríd Uí Lubhaing, Eagraíocht na
Scoileanna Gaeltachta; and Máire Uí Shíthigh, Oidhreacht Chorca
Dhuibhne.

Conradh na Gaeilge is organising the seminar to direct the attention
of the Department of Education towards the basic human right to
survival of the Irish language community and the Gaeltacht regions
within the education system. The title of the seminar, I dTreo
Pholasaí Oideachais Gaeltachta, or Towards a Gaeltacht Education
Policy, encapsulates the basic problem in Gaeltacht schools: the
Department has no specific education policy in place for Gaeltacht
areas.

Rectifying this negligence, and guaranteeing the Gaeltacht community’s
right to the best education possible, will be the focus for the
seminar discussion. Seosamh Mac Donnacha, Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta
Gaeilge, Galway, will draw on his own research on the subject, and in
particular the research done for the linguistic study on the use of
Irish in the Gaeltacht.

Eagraíocht na Scoileanna Gaeltachta is a long-established organisation
working with Gaeltacht schools that face the practical difficulties
involved in teaching through Irish in the Gaeltacht, and Bríd Uí
Lubhaing will be sharing her experience from her work with her
listeners.

Máire Uí Shíthigh has first-hand experience of education in the
Gaeltacht, as a parent, as a community activist and as Administrator
with Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne. Máire will be putting forward some of
her own ideas on policy changes needed.

Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa, Conradh na Gaeilge President and chair of the
seminar said: “It is appropriate that Conradh na Gaeilge holds this
important seminar in the Great Blasket Centre. Ionad Oidhreachta an
Bhlascaoid is situated at the heart of a Gaeltacht where Irish is the
language of the community, because of this community’s decisions in
the past. If it were not for Corca Dhuibhne’s commitment to its
traditions, humanity and the Irish expression of our common humanity
in particular, would be the poorer.”

The seminar is open to all and the audience will be welcome to voice
their opinions as part of the debate on the night.

Many other events will be held throughout the weekend as part of
Conradh na Gaeilge’s Tionól Gaeltachta, 02 – 05 July 2009, in
Ballyferriter. More information on the Tionól Gaeltachta is available
