Invitation to Partnership for Diversity 2009

EBLUL’s annual Partnership for Diversity conference (PfD) will be held
in Ljouwert – Leeuwarden, Fryslân from 28th – 30th October on the
topic of “The relationship between transmission of cultures and the
transmission of languages.”

The conference is co-organised and hosted by the Mercator Research
Centre and will be held along with EBLUL’s annual general assembly.

PfD is aimed at policy decision makers from countries and EU-regions
with multilingualism policies, and will precede the final performance
of Liet-Lavlut on 31 October (also in Ljouwert/ Leeuwarden).

The Partnership aims to bring together academic experts and
representatives of local / regional authorities, in order to combine
academic knowledge with hands-on experience.

The organisers stress “the mutual responsibility to have a sound basis
of research which gives guidance to a sound implementation of actions.
Thus, the conference’s goal is to create an agenda of activities,
which aim at preserving and fostering Europe’s regional minority
languages (RMLs). For this reason we particularly welcome
representatives of regional and local authorities, which bear
responsibility for the promotion of linguistic diversity in their

There will be presentations and workshops on: the role and
responsibility of regional and local authorities towards the
protection and promotion of RMLs and cultures; how far cultural and
linguistic rights can preserve and promote RMLs and cultures; and new
trends in formal and informal transmission of cultures and languages,
which includes presentations of the new pavilion for new language
experiences such as in Fryslân's 'Lân fan taal' and Catalonia's
Linguamon centre.

A constantly updated version of the programme, as well as further
