MALAYSIA NEEDS MORE THAN LANGUAGE POLICY TO NURTURE UNITY
Bernama - Sunday, July 19KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -
Malaysia needs more than just a language policy to enhance unity in
the country, said International Islamic University of Malaysia law
expert Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Bari. He said the adoption of Malay language
as the national language was done with certain objectives, including
forging national unity. He added that similar reason was also cited in
the use of the language as the medium of instruction in schools.
"Somehow, more than fifty years after independence we are still
talking about national unity as if we have only been independent in
the past 10 years," he said at a Seminar on Sustaining National Unity
organised by the University of Malaya here today.
In the paper entitled: "The National Unity: The Federal Constitution
Perspective" Abdul Aziz said the term "national unity" was nowhere to
be found in the constitution. "Be that as it may, there are
arrangements and provisions whose operations could have a bearing on
national unity. These include the role and powers of the Conference of
Rulers or even the Senate," he said. Abdul Aziz also said it was
important to find out the most effective way to make people understand
and committed to the ideas contained in the Constitution.
