No shutting down English schools: govt

TNN 23 July 2009, 03:27am IST

BANGALORE: The Suprme Court’s judgment on Tuesday must have brought
smiles to thousands of English medium schools in the state. But they
will carry the derecognition tag, says the government. R G Nadadur,
principal secretary for primary and secondary education, told TOI: “We
will go ahead as per the order. There is no scope for interpretation.
All the schools that were running without recognition will not be
closed down. But they will remain with the tag of derecognition till
the case is finally disposed of.’’

But what about the schools that were closed down or those who have
applied for fresh applications? “We will not do anything about those
because the order does not cover them. The state’s SLP against the
Karnataka HC order is still pending in SC. It will be heard in last
week of August,’’ added Nadadur. As regards the contempt case against
the state, slated for July 24, he will await the ruling on the Friday.

According to general secretary of KAMS, Krishna Iyer, the then primary
and secondary education minister Basavaraj Horatti took about 3,000
schools to task for violating the language policy. About 2,300 of them
were derecognized. The schools were fined instead for their
indiscretion. In July 2008, the high court ruled in favour of these
institutions. But the state government refused to comply and did not
restore the recognition for them. The reason? The state still had the
Special Leave Petition pending in SC. “Till the SLP is disposed of in
the court, the government is not recognizing the schools either,’’
added Iyer.
