Govt hopeful of convincing SC on medium of instruction
Karnataka Primary and Higher Secondary Education Minister Vishveshwar
Hegde Kageri today expressed the hope of convincing the Supreme Court
on the language policy of the government which wanted to implement
instruction in local languages in primary schools that had been struck
down by the High Court. Addressing the newsmen on the sidelines of a
function here, he said the government would take the opinion of
writers, scholars, education experts and also those from different
walks of life and would formulate opinion to convince Supreme Court as
regards medium of instruction in primary schools.
Kannada being the primary lingua franca of Karnataka, the government
desired the medium of instruction should be mainly in Kannada, while
English can come next, he said. Regarding some schools teaching in
English Medium obtaining permission to run Kannada Medium Schools, he
said it was not fair on their part. He clarified that fines were
imposed on such schools. The government had not accorded any sanction
for more such schools.
English is being taught as one of the subjects from primary level
itself, he said. The government was awaiting the results of uniform
education policy to be implemented throughout the nation. The proposal
had been placed in Rajya Sabha and the outcome of the discussion in
this regard had been awaited, he said.
