MORGAN HILL: POLICE: LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES FOIL ARMED ROBBERY ATTEMPT

MORGAN HILL (BCN)

Two men who allegedly tried to rob a 7-Eleven store in Morgan Hill
late Tuesday left with only cigarettes after a language barrier
frustrated their attempt to take more, police said. Officers
responded to a 7-Eleven at 295 W. Main Ave. where at about 11:45 p.m.
two men had attempted to rob the store by cornering a cashier clerk
and threatening him with a knife, Morgan Hill police said.
Surveillance footage from the store shows a man, possibly 16 to 20
years old, entering the store wearing a gray hoodie over his head,
blue jeans and white shoes. The suspect allegedly said something to
the cashier clerk on duty, and at some point asked and received the
clerk's permission to wash his hands behind the counter.

The suspect then briefly left the store and came back in followed by a
second suspect, 17 to 20 years old wearing a white bandana over his
nose and mouth, a white T-shirt, black pants and dark shoes, according
to police. The second suspect reportedly threatened the clerk with a
knife while the other cornered him behind the service counter Police
say the fact that cashier was not fluent in English frustrated the
robbers into abandoning their plans, as within about 10 seconds the
video showed both suspects fleeing the store on foot towards Crest
Avenue after one stole numerous packs of cigarettes but nothing more.

Anyone with information regarding this robbery is asked to contact
Morgan Hill police Detective Howard at (408) 779-2101 or the anonymous
tip line at (408) 947-STOP (7867).
