School Language Skills In Decline
Foreign language teaching in primary schools has declined over the
past few years. The range of languages available has also suffered in
many areas. Some experts say that Finland is raising a generation
whose language skills will not get them far in working life. During
the past decade or so the study of foreign languages has plummeted. At
best in the past, by fourth grade about 40% of pupils had voluntarily
started a first foreign language. Today that figure is 25%.
