‘Kannada has developed mainly on its own’

Failure to popularise the glory of Belvadi Mallamma lamented

Belgaum: Noted writer and veteran Kannada activist M. Chidananda
Murthy has called upon the State Government to make concerted efforts
to put pressure on the Centre to take a final decision on granting
classical language status to Kannada. Dr. Murthy was speaking after
inaugurating the five-day Naada Habba celebrations here on Monday. He
said that the Linguistic Experts Committee had recommended granting of
classical language status to Kannada and Telugu. However, the Centre
had to take a final decision on the issue, pending the decision of the
Madras High Court on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition which
had raised questions on appointment of members to the committee.

Dr. Murthy said that some groups in Tamil Nadu were against
Karnataka’s efforts to get classical language status for Kannada.

Report

Speaking about how a committee of experts headed by him had prepared a
300-page report providing justification for the claim for classical
language status to Kannada, he said that the language had a recorded
history of 1,500 years. Kannada had developed mainly on its own, he
said. He said that once the Centre granted classical language status
to Kannada, it would pave the way for establishment of centres of
excellence, chairs and bring international honours to Kannada writers.
Centres of excellence had been started in Tamil and Sanskrit languages
in Chennai and Tirupati. These centres would facilitate a highly
disciplined approach as well as an inter-disciplinary approach to
linguistic studies.

He also lamented the failure to popularise the glory of Belvadi
Mallamma, who had built an Army and defeated Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj. Prabhakar B. Kore, M.P.; working president of Naada Habba
Utsav Samiti H.B. Rajashekhar; general secretary C.K. Jorapurkar and
Sri Gurusidda Swamiji of Karanji Math were present.
