TIRF, The International Research Foundation for English Language Education
(TIRF) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to generate new knowledge
about English language teaching and learning.
It aims:
* To promote the application of research to practical language
problems
* To collect, organize, and disseminate information and research on
the teaching and learning of language
* To influence the formation and implementation of appropriate
language education policies, taking cognizance of the complementarity of
English as an international language and indigenous languages and cultures
worldwide
TIRF is committed to the development of a research agenda that is flexible
and dynamic, both addressing perennial issues and evolving as critical
questions present themselves. The foundation's current focus is on promoting
research and best practices that will improve the use of English in the

The Lariat Online
Point of View: Falling in love with Russia, one language course at a time
By Lela Atwood
A year ago, I did not think I was capable of learning a foreign language.
The idea of knowing a second language sounded wonderful, but there was no
hope for me. I was born in an English-speaking household and was barely
exposed to other languages.
Many people implied that learning a language was too big of a feat for an
American, like me, to attempt. Others said there was no hope for someone to
learn a language unless they were either a young child or a language genius,
two things that I do not use to describe myself. The last blow came,
however, when I made a "C" average in my Spanish classes.

300 Strike Soldiers in Language Training
He that converses not, knows nothing. The Soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat
Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), understand that well as they
plan to converse time and again with the Afghan people as they continue to
ready themselves for their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.
The Strike Brigade currently has 300 of its Soldiers involved in language
training courses teaching the basics in Afghanistan's two national
languages, Dari and Pashto. With the goal of breaking the communication
barriers when deployed, the 2nd BCT realizes the importance of interaction
among Soldier and local nationals.

The Herald
Number of Gaelic schools needs to treble in bid to boost language
The number of dedicated Gaelic schools in Scotland will have to treble and
the number of teachers being trained in the language quadruple over the next
two years.
The ambitious targets will be needed if a plan to create a new generation of
Gaelic speakers is to be met.
B?rd na G?idhlig, the statutory language development body, yesterday
published its two year plan and ministers welcomed its focus on early years,
Gaelic-medium education and adult learning.

Rosetta Stone CEO Adams foresees growth from Ivy League, iPad
Rosetta Stone Inc. plans to spur sales of its language-learning software by
expanding into Ivy League universities and targeting new devices, like Apple
Inc.'s iPhone and iPad, Chief Executive Officer Tom Adams said.
Though the Arlington-based company isn't ready to announce an application
for the iPad, it will release a version for the iPhone in the second half of
the year, Adams said.

Irish-exempt students sit for other languages
More than half of the students granted an exemption from studying Irish for
the Leaving Certificate due to a learning difficulty over the last three
years have sat or intend to sit other European language exams such as French
or German, data from the Department of Education shows.
Provisional figures of this year's crop of Leaving Certificate students show
2,297 students will not sit the Irish exam due to an exemption, but 1,326 of
those intend to sit an exam in another European language.
