"Totally wrong," he said of my French. My conjugation was off and I
should study spelling. On a scale of one to five, he said, my French
practice essay was worth a one. Then he disappeared into the anonymity
of the Internet.

Taiwan faces complex language legacy



When Taiwanese scholar Shih Cheng-feng was a boy, he was forced to
speak a language that was not his own, and four decades later he still
feels handicapped by his education.



He grew up under a nationalist regime that had fled China and now
wanted him and everyone else to speak the dominant dialect of the
mainland, with the right Beijing accent.

The Gaeltacht summer courses run by Col?iste Naomh Eoin in Dublin and
Wicklow are probably the most school-like camps you will find - but
those who sign up know that already. In fact, the organisers don't
even like the two-week courses - held mainly in secondary schools - to
be called summer camps, because they are serious about covering the
Irish curriculum in morning classes.

The Foreign Language Program Office of the Office of the Director of
National Intelligence (ODNI) and the National Cryptologic School (NCS)
are pleased to host a series of Language Education and Resources
Network (LEARN) conferences.

The purpose of the LEARN conference series is to provide language
professionals a venue to interact with their colleagues where they can
discuss and explore issues related to the science and technology of
foreign language education. The target audience for these conferences
includes instructors, course developers, and other language
professionals from U.S. government affiliated institutions.

Each conference will showcase a different language and will be
presented at different locations.
