AfriForum Youth slam continued maladministration of matric results
Kallie Kriel - Tuesday, January 05, 2010

AfriForum Youth today demanded of the Minister of Basic Education, Ms
Angie Motshekga, to take disciplinary steps against all officials
responsible for the maladministration of the matriculation examination
of 2009. AfriForum Youth also indicated that it will take up this
matter with the Human Rights Commission and the Public Protector and
that it is also ready to launch a comprehensive campaign to assist
matriculants disadvantaged by this incompetence. These steps are taken
in light of the fact that the Department of Basic Education had been
responsible for the maladministration of the results and the issuing
of certificates of thousands of matriculants last year. AfriForum
Youth assisted hundreds of these matriculants, whose rights had been
violated by the Department, successfully.

The National Chairman of AfriForum Youth, Ernst Roets, said that the
matriculants’ constitutional right to just administration is directly
being contravened by the Department of Basic Education. “The
Department’s inability to perform its basic functions is a national
disgrace. This problem can only be addressed if the Minister were to
take disciplinary steps. Roets added that it is ironic that this is
the very same Department of Basic Education that spends thousands to
interfere with successful schools such as Hoërskool Ermelo by opposing
the school’s language policy in courts, while the Department cannot
even comply with its own duties towards the public by providing basic
services.

Several times during 2009, AfriForum Youth warned the Department of
Basic Education that the problems that cropped up during the
matriculation exams of 2008, would reoccur, unless the Department took
steps to prevent it. To AfriForum Youth’s knowledge, such steps have
never been taken. -During 2009, AfriForum Youth continued assisting
matriculants of 2008 who did not receive their results on time even up
to October.
