Meeting Description:

Exploring the Theories and Approaches Used in South-East Asian Inter-
Lingual and Intra-Lingual Translation

Introduction
The development and progress in the field of translation as an academic
discipline itself has gained worldwide recognition. Similarly, in the South
East Asian region with its diverse cultures and languages, translation
practices are also of global standard. However, it is a known fact that most
translation theories and approaches depend heavily on researches done by
western scholars whose main focus were on the pairing of American-
European languages. The varied languages in South East Asian region
share certain similarities and differences intra linguistically and extra
linguistically. Thus there is an urgent need to come up with translation
theories and approaches which are more suited and appropriate for this
region.

The objectives of this seminar are:
a) To explore and discuss relevant theories and approaches used in South
East Asian inter- lingual and intra-lingual translations.
b) To create an avenue for researchers and language experts in this South
East Asia region to share new discoveries, knowledge and experiences in
the field of translation.
c) To raise the standard of translation to the level of a specialized academic
discipline among the South East Asian communities.
