The research project consists of 3 studies:
1 Adult literacy in the recent history of Timor-Leste (1974-2002)
By Estêvão Cabral, from April 2009 until April 2012

During the seminar Estêvão Cabral will present his study, focusing on
the brief period of
decolonisation (1974-1975), prior to the Indonesian invasion of
December 1975, during
which FRETILIN, the Timorese pro-independence party, launched a
literacy campaign.
Dr. Estêvão Cabral is a researcher at Tilburg University. Before the
start of this study (April
2009) he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of
Birmingham. He completed
his PhD in Political Science at Lancaster University, UK in 2002.

2 Adult literacy acquisition and use in Tetum and Portuguese

During the seminar Danielle Boon will present some first results of
her study, focusing on
the teaching and learning in currently available adult literacy
programmes in Timor-Leste.
She is doing a survey among participants (adult learners & literacy
teachers) in a range of
programmes across the country.
Danielle Boon is a PhD student at Tilburg University. Before the start
of her study (April
2009) she worked for the United Nations Development Programme as an
adult literacy
advisor at the Ministry of Education in Timor-Leste from November 2003
until December
2008.
3 Fataluku language development and literacy
By Edegar da Conceição Savio, from Feb. 2010 until Feb. 2014

During the seminar Edegar da Conceição Savio will present his study,
focusing on the
position of Fataluku in the national language policy. He will also
present his field visit plan
for June/July/August 2010 (questionnaire, interviews, etc).
Edegar da Conceição Savio is a PhD student at Tilburg University.
Before, he worked as a
lecturer international relations (subjects: conflict resolution,
politics of international
business), and as a dean of faculty and vice rector at Dili University
in Timor-Leste. He was
a guest lecturer at the Gadjah Mada University in Yogjakarta and the
University of Nusa
Cendana in Kupang, West Timor.--
