Groups' open letter on 'threats' to Welsh language

A group of organisations which promote the use of the Welsh langauge
have called for the draft Welsh language law to be amended.

The 14 bodies, including teaching union UCAC and Friends of the Earth
Cymru, have published an open letter to Heritage Minister Alun Ffred
Jones.

They say the language is "facing threats from many directions".

Learning Center for the Deaf building $6 million early childhood
learning center and library

Framingham's Learning Center for the Deaf is building a $6 million,
20,000-square-foot early childhood learning center and library, a move
that the director said is not only helpful, but necessary.

"The little kid population is growing quite a bit because [deaf]
babies are being identified much earlier," said Michael Bello, the
school's director.

The school has a waiting list for its preschool, and toddlers through
kindergartners now share a building with the elementary school kids.
Once the new building is completed, the youngest students will move
into an age-appropriately designed space, which means the elementary
school kids will have more room, too.

Could you pass the new English test for UK migrants?

The Government's introducing a new test for anyone coming to live in
the UK as the husband, wife, fianc?e or civil partner of a British
citizen. They'll have to prove they have a basic grasp of the language
before they're granted a visa.

Newsbeat's been along to one language school to find out what the
students there think of the plans.

In a classroom in North London, a group of around 15 students are
sitting around learning how to talk about their relatives. We're
hearing about Carol's family back home in Brazil - and in particular,
her cheeky younger brother.

Use of mother tongue in classes inspires kids

Using mother tongue for education in a school in Chidipani-1,
Dhairani, has inspired students, teachers and even parents.

The Nava Jagriti Primary School, located in a Magar village, has
breathed a new lease of life ever since starting to use Magar language
in education. The Magar students, who speak their mother tongue at
home, are finding it easier to understand the textbooks after use of
the language in classes.

Seven Resolutions For Strenthening Position Of Malay Language

Efforts must be undertaken to encourage research and writing among
Malay language teachers towards improving the teaching and learning of
the language.

The position of the Malay language as the national language should
also be strengthened to be in tandem with efforts to raise English
language proficiency among Malaysians.
