ICANN Board Approves Chinese Language Internationalized Domain Names

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- ICANN’s board, which is responsible for
decisions relating to policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers, has
approved a set of Chinese-language internationalized top-level domain
names, enabling millions to soon be able to access the Internet
entirely using Chinese script. According to ICANN’s Friday
announcement, the new IDN country code TLDs and the associated
organizations approved by the board are CNNIC (China Internet Network
Information Center), HKIRC (Hong Kong Internet Registration
Corporation Limited), and TWNIC (Taiwan Network Information Center).
The Chinese-language TLDs, ICANN president and chief executive officer
Rod Beckstrom said, will be available within two to three months.

“This approval is a significant change for Chinese language users
worldwide,” Beckstrom said in a statement. “One fifth of the world
speaks Chinese and that means we just increased the potential online
accessibility for roughly a billion people.” In May, the first IDN
country-code TLDs were inserted in the domain name system root zone,
making the first non-Latin TLDs available with the launch of three
Arabic-language TLDs. Egypt (مصر), Saudi Arabia (السعودية), and the
United Arab Emirates (امارات) were the first countries to appear
online in their own language and script as the result of the IDN ccTLD
Fast Track Process.

In what was an important week for domains, the ICANN board also voted
to allow the application for the controversial .xxx TLD to move
forward as a potential community site for the adult entertainment
industry. The board approved the application upon conditions including
expedited due diligence, negotiations on a draft registry agreement,
and consultation with ICANN's Governmental Advisory Committee. “The
board reached a carefully considered decision, paying close attention
to the findings of the Independent Review Panel, and to the extensive
public comment on our proposed action," ICANN chairman Peter Dengate
Thrush said.
