Sanskrit thriving in UK schools

Sanskrit may be resource starved and may find fewer pupils in India,
but there are schools and universities in the UK where the language is
thriving.

At the St James Junior School in London, the number of students
wanting to learn the language has grown by leaps and bounds.

Unlikely passion may save Eyak language

When the last Alaska Native who could speak the Eyak language fluently
died in 2008, Fairbanks linguist Michael Krauss became the only person
who could still hold a conversation in it.

He just didn't have anyone to talk to. Until now.

Media's function in preserving VN language debated

The mass media should play a better role in preserving and developing
the purity of the Vietnamese language, according to local linguistic
experts.

The media has a huge influence on the language, but some newspaper
reporters have started using English words when they should use
Vietnamese, said Professor and Dr Tran Ngoc Them, head of HCM City
Social Sciences and Humanities University's Faculty of Culture.

Weekend Wordery: Nicaraguan Sign Language

Until the early 1980s, deaf children in Nicaragua were mostly kept at
home and did not attend school. They did not learn any kind of
systematic sign language. But after the Sandinistas came to power in
1979, determined efforts were made to improve the country's education
system, which had until then been one of the poorest in Latin America.

Computer programs replace foreign language teachers in N.J. classrooms
after budget cuts

"Having a (world language) teacher in the classroom is always the
best. But in these times, we need to look to other ways to deliver
what we do," said Superintendent Daniel Fishbein. He said Ridgewood
saved just under $200,000 by cutting three Spanish teaching positions.
He estimated the computer program, called Rosetta Stone, cost about
$50,000.
