Two Penn GSE Professors Honored as AERA Fellows for Outstanding
Accomplishments in Education Research
March 16, 2010

PHILADELPHIA— Nancy Hornberger and Yasmin Kafai from the University of
Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education have been named Fellows of
the American Educational Research Association for their contributions
to education research. Internationally known for her work in
bilingualism and biliteracy, ethnography and language policy,
Hornberger researches, lectures and consults on multi-lingual
education policy and practice in the U.S. and around the globe. She is
also the convener of Penn GSE’s annual Ethnography in Education
Research Forum.

Kafai is a learning scientist who studies the role of technology in
education and social development. She has studied learning through
game design and in virtual worlds, paying particular attention to
issues of gender equity in science education interventions and in
gaming. She co-authored the new U.S. Department of Education report,
“Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology.”

“Nancy and Yasmin are remarkably accomplished scholars in their
respective fields, and this is well-deserved recognition of their
contributions,” Andy Porter, Penn GSE dean, said.
